Our New Reality
Saturday, November 22nd, 2008In the past few weeks, I have felt I have had to become more of a real parent. Carter no longer requires just the basic physical necessities food, diaper changes, clean clothes, love, etc. He has started to show a little defiance and battle for independence. He is turning into his own little person. As fun as it is to watch him grow up, it is hard coming to the reality that we are in charge of shaping his behavior.
The most recent incident occured this past week. He had gotten a hold of a CD ROM Mitch had used to download some software. Before I knew it, he had removed it from it’s paper case and was carrying it off into another room. I kindly took it from him and told him that it was Daddy’s and we needed to put it up. This sent him into a screaming, stomping fit. I tried to distract him with his toys, but when that failed I decided to just ignore him. I then quietly observed as he went over to the paper CD case and ripped it to pieces in a rage. After that he seemed fine and went on about his business. I, however, continued to sit there stunned at the task I had before me to raise this little boy to know right from wrong.
